alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5308793327209613106" />
its taken about nine months for this post to gestate. now it delivers. after ragbrai in july and hurricane ike and all that in september it took two months for me to begin to care about anything. now i'm working on getting volunteers for empty bowls houston on march 21st. it benefits the hungry and i care about this.

i still feel detached. and different. ragbrai changed me. that's for sure. besides the fact that lubrication makes everything better i learned that i still have it. something. strength. some power i associate with youth. and i didnt know i still had it until i rode across iowa. so thats good. but it doesnt change the fact that my marriage is horribly broken. and unfixable. and that's really depressing.

anyways, i'm making bowls for EB and i'm making stuff for the next woodfire. when ever that is.

my first solo show was this spring in february at lonestar college montgomery.

i just helped fire and unload rob's wood kiln at jenny's place in weimar tx feb2009. photos of that woodfire are at flickr. squid_lady is my flickr name. also on flickr you will see photos of jake's woodfire in edom during the fall2008. i'm feeling fortunate to get an invite to these firings. these guys are both wonderful people, if you ever get a chance to meet either robby or jake, you will find that they are lovely, terrific people and they know their woodfire stuff too.

i'm learning all i can from them.

speaking of learning. i went to a bodacious kickin workshop in january 2009 in dripping springs at bridget hauser's pottery. called texas clay continuum, i came back from that so jazzed! how fun. my friend went too. on the second to last day, she bought 3 different bottles of good rum trinidad, nicaraguan and another rum. she tried to get a 300 pound man drunk then tried to arm-wrestle him for his hat. but he out foxed her and gave other people almost all the drinks she gave him... because he said rum makes him stupid. this guy is quite the trickster, my friend got very drunk. i drove her home.

i'm taking ceramics two right now and we have a glaze project. line blends. i am doing 13 matte glazes and 4 different glossy rutile glazes to layer over the mattes.
lots of tests. guess i need to post photos of that. got two fine rutile glazes so i'm stoked!

note to self - try them in wood, soda or salt.

i'm planning to go to phoenix for nceca - but my friend the rum-lady backed out so i guess i'm going solo. i'm sure somebody i know is going. anyone?
new words for my blog. after RAGBRAI 2008

well I finished RAGBRAI 2008. i didn't know i could do it. i did stuff like this at 16 and 24 but that has been a while. so it is time to post some new words to my blog.

marcus is making us add stuff to the thundering texans's wiki.
our bike group is the thundering texans. i dont know why it is called the thundering texans.

i ate pie - apple, cherry, peach, (a peach and a cherry kolache), cherry and chocolate cream and apple pie on the 470 mile ride across iowa.

some words to describe what RAGBRAI is like would be good here. if i could think of some. riding a bike across iowa with 10,000 or more (i swear there were more than 10 thousand) other people is a crowded 500 mile church bake sale with a little bit of parade or carnival atmosphere tossed in.

<img width='1' I am using a stoneware clay called Bristlecone I bought from Mile High ceramics http://www.milehiceramics.com/clay.htm in Denver. I also bought Zen which is their most popular porcelain.

I am going for functional pieces first on the wheel, cups, plates, bowls. Then I may try to throw a bit larger. I love hand building with slabs so I will do this mostly at home where I have space on the screen porch and where I can go out and poke at something and work on it when it is exactly right and then wrap it up and come back until it is right for the next thing.

I made some three-sided slab-constructed bowls last spring that I liked so I made a few more with bristlecone. and I decided to expand on that construction technique and I made cookie jar w/lid. The first child is a freshman at colorado mines. I moved her to CO about 2 weeks ago. She started practice for volleyball season right away, which is good, no time to be homesick.

Many people ask me if I am sad about her leaving home. I dont know if they are just evil cranks trying to elicit an emotional response, cause me pain or something. Lets poke at her and see if she starts to cry!

I do miss her and I am sometimes sad for moments. But the sadness takes an odd form - of grieving for the loss of a small child, which feels so misplaced that I have to feel the emotion is wrong, broken. Time goes by, people grow up and live their lives, it's natural, it's what you want to happen. Most of the time I am so happy and I feel so great about her leaving for college because she is so successful, living a life filled with fun, adventure and high achievements, that many only dream of. And she is going to a great school and she works hard and she is well-prepared so she has every chance to support herself when she graduates and gets a great job someplace. Its what you want for your kids.

posts from vacation

i bore you, all three readers of mine. Friday I had the good fortune to be able to visit the center and see them. The gallery features five ceramic artists Frank Boyden, Elaine Coleman, Tom Coleman, Jenny Lind and Don Reitz.

During my visit, Initially I loved the first ones I saw - very elegantly formed cups by Tom Coleman. porcelain. cone 10. wood fired. shino glazes, dry ash, orange shino over copper slip, crystal matte glaze sprinkled with dry ash. I made notes. I thought I might buy some porcelain to try it. Never hurts to try. The Tom Coleman cups were lovely shapes. Very light, trim pieces. thrown. altered some but not mutilated. the rims were light a bit squared off here and there, undulating very slightly, gracefully.

As I moved on to the next case, I really made a connection with the pieces by Jenny Lind when I tried to sketch the art featured on the inside and outside in reds and blacks, greys and whites. I enjoyed the white shore bird forms. The line drawings of white horses, white hands with red nails and a galloping yellow cheetah featured on the surfaces of the different Lind bowls held my attention as I tried to imagine how to brush engobes in such fine lines and draw birds and horses with such nice movement. The lines on the Lind pieces were so fine they could have been made with a pen tip. Then I studied the bowls for color use. Some had a bold red glaze inside, black outside some appeared to be orange and some had white brush strokes on black creating a washy grey tone. Each Lind bowl had this lovely art inside and out. One featured a robin painted inside the bowl, very Audubon. The robin, in very bright color and detailed brush strokes, was painted from the top view. As you peek into the bowl it's as if you are looking into a nest.

I found sketching the Boyden pieces, pleasing as they were small sensual shapes with delicate but luscious curves and bumps. To sketch them and I had to focus in and concentrate on the wavy form which was a joy. I found that I liked them even more than the Tom Coleman cups, because of the random way Boyden gently alters the piece, nudging the thrown cup out in finger-sized nodules, creating lovely curves and shadows inside and outside the cup. The Boyden cups were wood-fired porcelain cone 12, no glaze. I again made a note to try porcelain someday.

Next, I studied and sketched the Don Reitz bowls. My companions grew restless. They were larger and rougher even clunky compared to both Tom Coleman and Boyden's. Reitz constructs his cups of white stoneware, wood fired, slip decorated, shino glaze inside cone 10 to 12. The cylider forms held slight alterations. Some wore carved geometric marks - square rectangle diamond - centered like a crest. While some had horizontal marks like a belt cinching in a waistline. The most striking feature of the Reitz pieces was the amount and variation of color each bowl carried including blasts of rust, red-orange and garnet-red along side the grey, yellow-green and white speckled surfaces. Note: Be sure to bring portable watercolors or color pencils if you have them - because these pots will make your sketchbook long for more color.

Finally, the last artist in the soul of a bowl was Elaine Coleman. Mouthwateringly fluid and beautifully carved porcelain cups with cool green transparent celadon glazes that melt your eyes. Newts, draped and overlapping - winding flora and fauna, moths- too ubelieveably beautiful to be real. thats all I can say.

October ends too

well everything is going alright.
the weather is summer-like. not like november at all.

i did a slight swoop down then picked it up again. grin and bear it or enjoy the ride.

here are some photos of glazed pots. ceramics class is still in the swing and i am still trying to throw red clay. switching to stoneware tomorrow hopefully.

we have a teapot assignment. mine are turning out thrown and altered. which is great as long as they turn out.

photos of teapots to come...

for now. I had most of my pieces there but left out some because I really have a lot more pieces than anyone else (except maybe for Lou - but he is working smaller - making the perfect cup so it isn't as obvious) and I dont like to be so out of place. But I love making clay things and I will keep doing it if I can. I have some glazed things now so next post I will post photos of that stuff. For now I am trying to make slab formed pots like the two below and practice my wheel forms (cylinder and half sphere/bowl) and do some sgraffito turtles (black underglaze on Longhorn White clay) on mugs. Cheers!

There are photos of my latest pots (greenware) on my website.

gro - rillas

just got immersed in the new gorillaz cd demon days. wow. love it. get it.

september ends

too much has been written already about rita. i pass.

welcome october!

have posted new photos to my website photo album.

still making pots in my ceramics class. testing some glazes on bisque and trying to imagine a combination of unknowables and luck to decide what glazes to use on my pieces. i have a bunch of pots made with low-fire clays so i am going to use some commercial glazes- just really trying not to end up with a lot of really awful things at the end.

here is my latest thing still wet from its birth. i'm putting turtles on stuff. i made the stamp from a thin piece of craft foam and scissors. Kay Bailey sends her love. AND she
thanked me for contacting her regarding "the situation in iraq". and she welcomes my thoughts and comments on this issue. AND she appreciates hearing from me and hopes I will not hesitate to keep in touch on any issue of concern to me!

WOW!

The problem with my senator is that a wax figure would do just as good a job representing me in congress. She just regurgitates the GOP line. and nothing she says makes any sense to me.

In her letter of July 20th she says:
"I understand the tremedous sacrifices out soldiers and their families endure. I had the opportunity to travel to Iraq to visit our troops and assess the situation first-hand."

She never got out of the airport during her visit to Iraq.

The letter continues with this:
"Even though Saddam Hussein's regime has been removed from power, ruthless killers still strive to hinder development of a democratic Iraq. The Iraqi people deserve the opportunity to craft their own destiny, and America is committed to helping them in this process."

So. If we are there to help, why did we drop thousands of bombs on Bagdad? Why did we level Falluja flat? The Iraqis deserve the opportunity to craft their own destiny? Then why didn't we let them overthrow Saddam themselves?

What if we instead called the the opposition fighters that Kay Bailey calls "ruthless killers", opposing the US troops' invasion of Iraq, freedom fighters? Isn't it just a matter of linguistic gymnastics? Don't those fighting in opposition to the American occupation forces want freedom too.

Then her letter says:
KB: "More than eight million Iraqi citizens turned out to vote in historic elections held on January 30, 2005, and the newly-seated Parliament continues to make progress setting up a representative government."

[eight million voted, what is the population of Iraq? possibly over 24 million]
While the Iraq elections are a good thing. That was 6 months ago. Things there have not improved for our troops they are still the target of attacks every day. It is good that a government is being set up - too bad they didn't plan that before they started bombing.

KB: "As this new government takes hold, our uniformed men and women are working to defeat a brutal insurgency that routinely targets innocent Iraqis. Their mission includes training Iraq's own police and military forces who are increasingly assuming responsibility for their country's security. "

While the insurgency -is- brutal and seems to be growing in strength, the fact that Bush's plan did not include the scenario that US troops would not be welcomed as liberators is a failure in planning. Why should our troops pay with their lives and limbs for a failure of the government to plan- this is not a noble cause.

Also, the rate of gain in number of Iraqi police and military forces who are trained and ready is too slow. This is because those who work with us are then targets for the violent attacks by those who oppose the occupation. The only way for Iraqis to make dramatic gains is for us to leave. Take away the catalyst leave space for those who wish to be police and soldiers to own their country. True, they may have a small civil war but that is far better than this thing that we cannot win. It is logically impossible to win this. Freedom is something that it is just impossible for us to *give* to them. They get freedom exactly by us leaving.

KB: "Setting an arbitrary timeline for withdrawal of our forces would embolden the enemy and jeopardize all the progress made in Iraq thus far."

I dont want an arbitrary timeline. I want our troops out now. There has been no progress in Iraq. Unless you want to look at Falluja where some people are returing to rebuild their homes that we liberated them from.

KB: "A stable, democratic Iraq will make America safer and be a major victory in the war on terrorism."

This is still the worst fallacy. Iraq as a state was not a terrorist base before we went there and made the weapons inspectors leave so we could start bombing. If my senator thinks this is the war on terrorism then she is not competent to serve and should resign immediately.

KB: "You may be certain I will monitor this situation closely and keep your views in mind."

right.

wake me up when september ends

Today is the midnight bike ride benefit for Montgomery County (Texas) food bank. Also in 2005-May there are some stunning flower photos from Mercer. The red poppies are really breathtaking. And in yet another folder in 2005-May I am featuring the series of serene photos i took of gardenias and trumpet vine flowers in a blue ceramic pot. I am planning to print those in greeting cards. ...one day.

Today is a day for working on my website. I am also doing Oprah's boot camp (though i lasted only one week without bread, pasta and cereal). I continue the boot camp workouts and modified diet (i added cereal for breakfast - trying for something healthy and whole grain like granola or oatmeal). So I am supposed to lift and run today. I decided the Oprah boot camp was similar to tri training for a sprint triathlon so my goal is to prep for and finish a late season race somewhere in TX fall 2005. oh, and to lose weight, look younger and be healthier and all that.

pondering a running mind

a running mind without a blog is a thing to waste.

options running out for idealism. when your options run out you may take the first job that comes along and leave that idealism behind. after all you need the money and this one pays well. how can you at this point say - oof! i hate those abusers of global market domninance! i wont work on microsoft platform i'm too idealistic to take money and work in this niche. i suppose you can still hang on the the last shred of idealism and protest global market dominance and *not* spend that hard earned money at wal-mart.

thats about as far as it goes. you are still in technology and you still need a job in a hot market (hiring & paying fair wages) in order to get money to buy food even if you live in a solar powered yurt. whatever.

so i guess it could be the same (going back to pondering - why would any journalist work at fox news?) if you were a kid out-a college and wanted a journalism job and there was work at fox and you needed money. well you'd take the job. or maybe not. when should ideals win over needing work?

i have waited tables. it is not a career but it used to put gas in my orange 1974 volvo running on 2 cylinders.

Sheehan outside the Bush ranch in Texas

I want to send words of support to Cindy Sheehan, the mom who lost her son in Iraq who is protesting outside Mr. Bush's ranch. For me, it happens when I am at a theme park. Recently I visited the new Market Street shopping area in the Woodlands, TX (a pine forest where a community was built beginning 30 years ago, 35 miles north of Downtown Houston, Texas). Market Street is a high density shopping area - not a mall exactly because you have to walk around outside. It has faux old-looking buildings like a historic downtown might with 2 or 3 story old brick buildings. It has the trendiest restaurants with highest end shops, and a theater (which is another subject for later). There is piped-out music to the sidewalk everywhere you go. Reminded me of Seaworld in San Antonio and SixFlags/Astroworld where there is music coming out of fake rocks. I thought- what does my shopping experience gain from this ambient music? I guess the antidote to theme park music is an ipod or ipod equivalent. ha.

BTW the music where I shop 4 food is horrible, i feel ill and shudder while i shop. sometimes the music is soooo awful when i hear it i am so offended to have to listen to it - i feel angry and have violent thoughts. Antidote - cd player & headphones. I'll have to make a food shopping mix. Hmmm.

OK. What else do i find myself thinking - whose culture is this? OK. When I am at the quick jiffy lube place getting my oil changed and Mr. Bush started bombing Iraq that day, they had on Faux News on TV in the waiting area. It was so weird cause I don't watch it but people sitting there were sort of cheering! yay! The bombing starting and I was really appalled - watching bombs dropping on Baghdad. What a Horror! Who are these people who can be happy about bombing a large city with people in it?

I have looked at Fox News channel a few times trying to figure it out and i cant even figure out who those people are who would *work* there. How could working there be a positive career move for a journalist? I cant figure it out. Whose culture is this anyway?

I told you it was a jumble.

Waggle! it is it! my first post on blogspot!

I am so happy right now to post my first post on blogspot. What i have to say now has no impact. I hope to share many of my rare thoughts with anyone who reads. Mostly i see it as a waste of time. Many of the words of squidlady will be blather - what the a-hay. Should be fun and fun is good.

I saw Wedding Crashers. giving it low marks but it was entertainment. so well done. and it was relaxing.

Started oprah's boot camp about 1 week ago. i feel pretty fit as my workouts are going well. and the obc idea is inspiration and that helps me. I think i am in a manic phase right now. started a bunch of things - but as i said before - having fun and fun is good.
